Rocco Forte Hotels is a collection of 11 luxury hotels and resorts across Europe. Each hotel is as individual and characterful as the city which inspires its design featuring a unique sense of style and ambience. Each venue houses luxurious rooms, fine dining experiences, class-leading facilities and a dedication to providing its customers with the highest levels of service.

Brown’s Hotel is a 5 Star luxury hotel which originally opened in 1837. Located in London Mayfair it is just one of the 11 hotels offering exquisite dining facilities including traditional afternoon tea and a restaurant serving modern British cuisine. With rooms starting from around £350 a night the 5* hotel provides its guests with a luxurious retreat experience as well as a fine dining experience within the well renowned Hix restaurant. Often frequented by well-known and influential people the hotel has a strong reputation to uphold.

In 2013 the hotel contacted RESYN for advice on various resin floor finishes. The brief was to provide fully functioning, high quality non-slip flooring throughout their food preparation facilities. It was also imperative that the installation did not affect their customers experience at the hotel.

The initial installation which included the pot wash area and back of house corridors was later followed by installations within the tea kitchen and the “Hix kitchen” which serves food of a high standard from the unrivalled Mark Hix.

As with any premises and in particular, ones within London, it was essential that the installation was precisely prepared and executed as it was crucial there was zero impact on the daily operational procedures of the hotel. Although the Hix restaurant was shut down for the renovation the other restaurants within the hotel remained operational. To minimise the closure period an MMA resin system supplied by Degafloor was chosen.  Due to the strong odours that are produced by the MMA resins it was essential to accurately plan the installation and devise a fail proof ventilation procedure. Failure to do this effectively could have resulted in negative pr, not only to RESYN but also potentially destroying the exceptional reputation built up by one of London’s most established hotels. Back to back teams were employed to reduce the closure time and minimise the disruption to the hotel and their guests.

The historic building itself presented possible complications due to the various different subfloors. RESYN knew that problems with the substrate were to be expected and therefore the team had to be ready to resolve the issues to avoid any disruption. The highly experienced and qualified professional installation teams on the job were able to resolve any issues that were identified quickly and efficiently ensuring there were no delays to the programme. From previous installations and core tests undertaken the potential risks were assessed. As a result, part of the project scope included RESYN removing all existing floor coverings and installing WBP ply to ensure the floor was well supported prior to the application of the resin.

To minimise the visual impact to the entrance of the kitchen bespoke samples were made to match the surrounding environment. To alleviate any concerns regarding the cleanability of the floor RESYN offered cleaning advice along with the correct cleaning equipment on completion of the project.

On completion of the project the hotel staff displayed an enormous amount of gratitude for the way in which the project was completed, despite the problems that occurred during the installation.

Andras Gyurky, Assistant Chief Engineer at Browns Hotel comments

“It was a joy to work with RESYN. Despite the difficulties we have encountered during the works they completed the floor on time and the result is impeccable.”
