Royal Holloway, University of London decided it was time to modernise their facilities and redesign the Student Union. The main aim of the project was to improve the overall student experience at Royal Holloway by creating a fresh and exciting space including non slip floors. The University used feedback from the students to help identify the key priorities, of which image and décor was one.
With design being a major factor in the redevelopment the non slip floors had to be flexible in terms of aesthetics to meet with the design scheme. The Degafloor Flake system that was chosen for the project can offer excellent aesthetic flexibility, providing non slip floors that can be adapted to suit any design requirements. Following meetings with Inner Space Associates Ltd, designer on the project, it was agreed that three variations on black, white and grey were to be used in different ratios on different areas.
The resin non slip floors were installed into the bar, circulation, reception and auditorium areas and totalled approximately 500m2. The design incorporated bold, block colours on the walls which were complemented with blocked markings on the floor in contrasting black, white and grey colour variations. The areas were demarcated using stainless steel trim which requires intricate detailing and high standards to maintain and achieve a professional and seamless finish.
The refurbishment had to be completed over the summer vacation ready in time to welcome the new students in September, therefore timings were critical. RESYN worked alongside the main contractor, Russell Cawberry to install the non slip floors to a systematic schedule. The MMA based floors are fully cured within just two hours of installation which in turn allowed for a rolling programme where Russell Cawberry could continue working in the areas within a short period after.
