National Flooring are on fire!!!!

resin flooring installation fire engine Hastings Bohemia Road JPEG_1 EditEast Sussex Fire & Rescue has been established since 1997 and provides prevention, protection and response services to over 800,000 people in East Sussex and the City of Brighton & Hove. The Fire Authority manages 27 fire stations and has been updating their floors to maximise safety with the help of The National Flooring Company.

The Fire Authority has been working with The National Flooring Company for the last 10 years to ensure their stations are compliant when it comes to Health and Safety by installing durable, slip resistant flooring in their appliance bays. A total of 13 stations have been completed to date.

Most of the stations still had their original tiled flooring that were not providing adequate slip resistance in wet conditions. The Authority also had concerns over the durability of the tiles which were often breaking up due to the weight of the appliances, weighing on average between 12-13 tonnes.

The Degafloor FB system, recommended and installed by The National Flooring Company, offers the ideal solution for appliance bays because it is highly durable and slip resistant, even when floors are regularly exposed to wet and oily liquids, and can be installed with minimum disruption and downtime.

The Degafloor range of products are based on MMA resins which are thermoplastics and will achieve a chemical bond between each installation layer, resulting in a monolithic finish. Each new layer chemically fuses to the previous layer (or existing subfloor) creating a virtually unbreakable bond. This unique chemical bonding processes means that the resins can be applied directly onto the original tiles without having to remove them, providing they are securely fixed. This offers an exceptional time saving benefit for fire stations which only have small windows for refurbishment. For areas where tiles are broken and in need of repair The National Flooring Company can install a quick curing Degafloor repair mortar which again reduces time on refurbishment projects.

The Fire Service had made it very clear from the start that time was an issue when undertaking any refurbishment projects as the appliances cannot be stored out of the bays overnight or for any long periods of time.  All of the Degafloor products are fully cured within just 2 hours of installation allowing the fire engines to be stored back in the bays at the end of the day.

The National Flooring Company has continued to develop their relationship with East Sussex Fire Authority and has recently completed two more station flooring refurbishments at Battle and Hastings.

National Flooring rescue RNLI in Poole

The RNLI is a search and rescue charity with stations across the UK and Ireland working around the clock offering assistance to those in need. Alongside the charity’s commitment to saving lives at sea, the RNLI also has a duty of care to protect their volunteers who risk their own lives to save others. It is therefore essential the lifeboats provided are designed and manufactured to withstand the most extreme conditions. With technological advances and innovations continually being made, the tougher it is to find manufacturers with the ability to meet the requirements of their specialist lifesaving equipment. The charity therefore took the decision to acquire full control and construct a new manufacturing facility dedicated to the production of the strongest and highest quality all-weather lifeboats at their Headquarters in Poole.

This new facility has been developed to incorporate all critical business functions, including the design and production of new all-weather lifeboats, maintenance and repair of existing all-weather lifeboats, training, office and staff facilities as well as a visitors viewing area.

The latest specification all-weather lifeboats required by RNLI are exceptionally heavy, so the flooring within the new facility needed to offer suitable durability and longevity unaffected by the demanding conditions of the production environment. In addition, when the boats are brought in for repairs or testing, they are often transferred straight from the surrounding waters, thus alongside excellent durability the chosen finish also needed to provide a high degree of slip resistance.

The National Flooring Company has been working with the RNLI since 2007 installing the Degafloor range of MMA resin systems so both companies were approached from the onset of the planning of the project to provide their technical expertise.

Throughout the initial stages various specifications were discussed and evaluated and following extensive support from both The National Flooring Company and Degafloor it was agreed the Degafloor FB system most closely matched the design specifications and would be the most suited product for the environment.

The Degafloor FB system is a heavy-duty methyl methacrylate (MMA) screed that provides an outstanding level of slip resistance, created through the broadcasting of quartz aggregate. The product offers exceptional durability even in challenging environments and the benefits of the system have already been proven at many of the RNLI lifeboat stations throughout the UK and Ireland.

The project totalled 5300m2 and the installation team averaged 300m2 of finished floor a day to ensure the project remained on schedule. The area was used as a showpiece during the construction stages with benefactors visiting throughout and therefore it was critical that the highest standards were maintained for every element of works undertaken.

National Flooring ranks highly with the Police Federation

Friday, April 26th, 2013

commercial flooring resin polfedhq-0005-693c5025The Police Federation of England and Wales is a staff association that represents 131,000 police officers, through to the rank of Inspector. The headquarters of the establishment, based in Leatherhead, Surrey, is a state of the art complex which is also used as a training and conference centre as well as providing high standard hotel accommodation.

The Federation which was built nearly five years ago has a large catering facility which was fitted with a safety vinyl floor finish. Over the years the busy kitchen environment had caused the seams to crack and lift and therefore posed a Health and Safety risk. The Health and Safety department advised the Federation to refurbish their catering facilities to ensure the catering team were safe whilst at work.

Through recommendations by others, The National Flooring Company were contacted by the Federation to provide a more durable and slip resistant finish. The company, which specialise in the installation of resin flooring solutions have extensive experience within the commercial catering industry and are well aware of the critical time implications that are imposed on these types of installation. Federation House, the home of the organisation, is a particularly active environment which had little time for refurbishment.

As a result, a quick curing MMA resin with a broadcast of aggregate, for enhanced slip resistance, was specified. The company’s experience and expertise ensured that a systematic approach leading up to and throughout the installation was maintained. As part of the package, The National Flooring Company were asked to remove the existing vinyl and associated latex, a process that can become time consuming if the correct preparation equipment is not used. Investigations prior to the commencement of the installation ensured that the project could be completed within the agreed timescales.

The entire installation, which totalled 119m2 was completed within one weekend and the catering team were ready to resume business as usual on the Monday. The association now have a slip resistant, durable floor that can complement their high standard facilities.

Paul Everett, Facilities Supervisor comments, “ From my initial first enquiry through to the completion of the work and the subsequent customer satisfaction call I found national Flooring to be helpful, knowledgeable and reliable with a professional approach that is above the norm and refreshing to come across. This is a company that has been around for some time and has grown while still retaining the personal approach of a family run business. The MD and founder of the company came to see me and I was impressed with his care and commitment that the product was the most suitable and that the timescale would be adhered to.

The foreman of the team that carried out the work visited prior to commencement to ensure that he was familiar with the site and that there would be no surprises when they came to do the job. The work was started and completed as scheduled with no delays or overrun even though when removing the existing flooring there was found to be issues with the screed that resulted in additional unforeseen remedial work.

I would have no hesitation in recommending National Flooring to any prospective clients.”

National Flooring to the rescue

Monday, June 14th, 2010

commercial flooring resin C259C004-87a90b57With time being critical, Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service used to face a problematic task to find a hardwearing, slip resistant floor finish that could be installed with minimal disruption. However the Fire Service, who had previously called upon the services of National Flooring at other stations, were well aware of the benefits that an MMA resin floor can provide and asked for the exact same solution for the refurbishment of Aylesbury Fire Station.

The existing epoxy resin flooring system, which had been installed just 2 years previously had become worn and presented an uneven texture, which created a potential slip hazard and made it almost impossible to clean. Following a comprehensive site survey National Flooring specified the Degafloor FB System. The system, which cures fully within just 2 hours of installation, creates an extremely hard wearing, impervious and slip resistant floor finish.

The storage of appliances is extremely important and one of the biggest problems faced by the Fire Service is undertaking refurbishment projects which cause the appliances to be left out of the bays for any long period of time. Due to the quick curing nature of MMA resins National Flooring were able to carry out the installation in phases over three days. Within just 2 hours of installation the 13 tonne appliances were driven back in the bays to be stored overnight.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service who are in the process of creating a uniform station chose the same finish as previously installed at Amersham Fire station. On each of the bays tyre runways were installed in black with the remainder of the areas in red. Yellow boxes were then painted on top to act as an easy spot zone to ensure the drivers stop in the correct position.

As a precautionary measure, National Flooring installed protective polythene sheeting around the work area to prevent any dust ingress to the adjacent offices where sensitive equipment is installed which in turn allowed the crew to continue with their daily routine.

Rob Spearing of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue commented, “

Until National Flooring gave us advice on their flooring products we had been having ongoing problems with trying to identify a floor coating that would prove reliable. National Flooring also understood our needs as a Fire Service to keep the appliance bays operational whilst the work was being carried out and worked closely with us to accommodate these needs.”

A welcoming reception

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

commercial flooring resin Linc CC-b535f1faWhen Lincolnshire County Council decided to move to new offices in Gainsborough they asked Trent Valley Construction to find a decorative hardwearing floor finish in the reception area.

Having considered the benefits that a resin flooring solution could offer, Trent Valley Construction turned to National Flooring for advice.

The Council were looking for an attractive, yet hardwearing floor finish to welcome guests into their new premises. As a focal point of the new development aesthetics played a key role and following an initial consultation it became clear that the Degafloor Flake System would provide the ideal solution.

The system, which offers enormous flexibility in terms of aesthetics, provided the Council with the opportunity to create an eye-catching design. The client chose a grey finish with black flakes and silver glitter to complement the surroundings.

The system, which is installed at a nominal thickness of 4mm, provides outstanding durability which is required in this high footfall area. The floor is easy to clean and maintain, again making it the ideal solution for a reception area.

National Flooring were required to lay a polymer screed to level out the floor before installing the resin finish. Working with Trent valley Construction, National Flooring was able to complete the entire installation with minimal disruption to ensure that the development could progress within the limited timescales.

Anna Simpson, marketing manager at National Flooring states, “We were delighted to be chosen to complete this project for the Council. We know how important creating the right image is and we are always confident when aesthetics are top of the list. A resin floor offers outstanding durability and the Council can be reassured that they will have an easy to maintain floor for many years to come.”
