The National Flooring Company sends pupils on holiday

Wednesday, November 30th, 2016

c7cf6ce7-02c2-48a5-8f7b-23f702ddd0b7Every year The National Flooring Company donates money to a local organisation which has provided a service that helps to benefit the local community. Since 2011 the company has chosen to continue their support to the Phoenix School in Orton Goldhay, who take great pride in the quality of education and learning resources that they provide to the children of Peterborough.

The Phoenix school, rated outstanding by Ofsted, is a mixed day special school for children who have learning difficulties which may be severe or profound and multiple. The school opened in 2004 and caters for children aged between two and nineteen years of age. Due to financial constraints, the school is very reliant upon private sponsorship to help provide the latest resources and teaching equipment.

The National Flooring Company was initially made aware of the school by one of their Governors who explained the schools aims and achievements. The school’s continued commitment to developing their pupils by helping them to reach their full potential in both an educational and social setting is beyond commendable.

The school places a strong emphasis on educational visits and often organise trips to local places to help provide the students with a wide variety of experiences, all of which help with their educational and social development. The first donation made by The National Flooring Company in 2011 was used towards the purchase of a new minibus to transport the students and the following year the donation was used to help with the running costs of the vehicle.

The National Flooring Company recognised the benefits that were achieved through these donations and have continued to support the school. To further assist in the development of the students and to offer some respite for their families the school takes 15 pupils each year, starting in the spring term after Easter, to Kelling Heath where they hire lodges and caravans. Each holiday, which lasts from Monday to Friday, involves visits to local attractions and exploring on the beaches and is supported by the staff of the school who give their time willingly. The holidays are offered to all families irrespective of need, cultural background or disability. For most families, this might be the only respite they get and the sponsorship provided allows all pupils to be involved, regardless of financial situations.

Phil Pike, Head teacher at Phoenix School comments, “There is no disputing the fact without this invaluable support provided by The National Flooring Company we would not be in a position to run as many holiday weeks as we do, reaching and supporting as many families as we do allowing parents to re-charge their batteries. Holidays are so important for everyone’s emotional wellbeing and even more so for Phoenix children.”

Robert Brown, Managing Director of The National Flooring commented, “The work that the Phoenix School does for the children of Peterborough never ceases to amaze me. I have always been a strong advocate for supporting local organisations that make a difference within our community and this school is more than deserving of our support. I am thrilled that our donations can continue to help the good work that the school delivers in developing their students and supporting their families.”

An education in resin flooring…New College Stamford Project

Tuesday, October 11th, 2016

new-college-stamford-feature-image-1In one of the more modernized areas of the small historical town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, New College Stamford offers education and training to over 2,000 students every year providing a huge range of courses to suit everyone – A Levels, vocational, part-time adult courses, apprenticeships, higher education and professional training for businesses tailored to both individuals and employers.

Having previously worked with Derbyshire based contractor Wildgoose Construction on many projects over the years, Wildgoose asked The National Flooring Company to assist with the resin floor finishes required on the project. The project included a range of areas within the college all of which had varying requirements.

A seal system had already been specified for the teaching workshops. As a result, The National Flooring Company were able to install the Resdev Pumaseal PC system. The system which is a coloured polyurethane floor sealant can be used as a dustproofer and to add a coloured gloss finish to tired / dull concrete. Following strict Health & Safety regulations, line marking and stencils were also applied to demark walkways.

The client was experiencing difficulties refurbishing their current Granwood Flooring and was looking for a bold yet simple solution. To save on refurbishment costs the client did not want to remove the existing Granwood floor. The Degafloor range has an excellent bond to many different substrates however certain wooden floor finishes often contain solvents which can react with the resins. To avoid any potential complications, The National Flooring Company undertook several bond tests which successfully adhered to the floor. Subsequently, the Degafloor Freeflow system, a monocolour finish, was proposed as a viable solution for the area. To ensure the client was happy with the decision a sample of the floor was laid as a trial which was then followed by the complete installation totalling 420m2.

Simon Oak of Wildgoose Construction” Wildgoose Construction have worked with National Flooring on many contracts in the past, and always found them to offer a first class product and service. At New College, Stamford, National Flooring advised on the best flooring solution for the operations being carried out in the new extension, and carried out the work in a safe and timely manner. We will definitely be using National Flooring again”.

National Flooring gets student approval at Royal Holloway University

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

commercial flooring resin Image 7-56824268Royal Holloway, University of London decided it was time to modernise their facilities and redesign the Student Union. The main aim of the project was to improve the overall student experience at Royal Holloway by creating a fresh and exciting space. The University used feedback from the students to help identify the key priorities, of which image and décor was one.

With design being a major factor in the redevelopment the floor finish had to be flexible in terms of aesthetics to meet with the design scheme. The Degafloor Flake system that was chosen for the project can offer excellent aesthetic flexibility, providing a finish that can be adapted to suit any design requirements. Following meetings with Inner Space Associates Ltd, designer on the project, it was agreed that three variations on black, white and grey were to be used in different ratios on different areas.

The resin floor was installed in to the bar, circulation, reception and auditorium areas and totalled approximately 500m2. The design incorporated bold, block colours on the walls which were complemented with blocked markings on the floor in contrasting black, white and grey colour variations. The areas were demarcated using stainless steel trim which requires intricate detailing and high standards to maintain and achieve a professional and seamless finish.

The refurbishment had to be completed over the summer vacation ready in time to welcome the new students in September, therefore timings were critical. National Flooring worked alongside the main contractor, Russell Cawberry to install the floors to a systematic schedule. The MMA based floors are fully cured within just two hours of installation which in turn allowed for a rolling programme where Russell Cawberry could continue working in the areas within a short period after.

Anna Simpson of National Flooring comments, “We were delighted to be involved with this project and to work alongside Inner Space Associates in developing an innovative design to fit their brief. With the assistance and cooperation of Russell Cawberry we were able to complete the installation within a short time frame and with minimal disruption. All involved with the project have been delighted with the end result.”

National Flooring donates to local school

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

commercial flooring resin School Brochure 033-70259282Every year The National Flooring Company donates money to a local organisation which has provided a service that helps to benefit the local community. Over the last couple of years the company has chosen to support the Phoenix School in Orton Goldhay, who take great pride in the quality of education and learning resources that they provide to the children of Peterborough.

The Phoenix school, rated outstanding by Ofsted, is a day special school for children who have learning difficulties which may be severe or profound and multiple. The school opened in 2004 and caters for boys and girls aged between two and nineteen years of age. Due to financial constraints the school is very reliant upon private sponsorship to help provide the latest resources and teaching equipment.

The National Flooring Company was made aware of the school by one of their Governors who explained the schools aims and achievements. It was apparent that the establishment have an enormous focus on their pupils, working closely with them to help reach their full potential in both an educational and social setting. The achievements that the school have made are substantial and greatly benefit the local children. The National Flooring Company were impressed by the schools aims and accomplishments and decided to assist them further by offering a donation.

The money that was donated in the first year helped towards the purchase of a new vehicle and whilst The National Flooring Company usually only provide one donation per organisation, it was decided that they would provide a second donation the following year to help with the running costs of their new vehicle. The school often organise educational visits to local places to help provide the students with a wide variety of experiences. The donation helps the school to maintain these excursions and offer new ventures for the children, which help with educational development.

Phil Pike, Head teacher at Phoenix School comments, We are very grateful to the National Flooring Company for their generous support. This will now allow us to go out daily to visits both locally and nationally within the school bus. Without this support we would have to consider reducing the amount of visits taken within the school day. This also greatly helps our parents/carers who sometimes have difficulty in accessing such community resources!”

Robert Brown, Managing Director of The National Flooring commented, “I was astounded by the work that the school does for the children in Peterborough and as a local business we like to support local organisations that make a difference within our community. I am pleased that our donations can continue to help the good work that the school delivers.”

Top marks for National Flooring at Arthur Mellows Village College

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

commercial resin flooring DSC_1631-752b2531With the Target Capital Project well under way to improve schools amenities, Arthur Mellows Village College in Peterborough decided to enhance the schools facilities by creating a new science, media and IT facility. The school called on local company, National Flooring to provide, decorative yet durable resin floors for a variety of areas within the new development as well as within the existing building. The project was funded by a Target Capital Project grant and the Local Authority.

Having previously worked within educational establishments, National Flooring was aware of the functional characteristics that are required for a flooring system, as well as the creative and decorative requirements used to create a stimulating learning environment. After comprehensive consultations and meetings, National Flooring was confident that the range of resin systems they provide would ensure that a suitable system could be specified to match all of their requirements.

The installations, which first took place in the extension for the new facility, were followed by installations in the existing building where the existing Granwood floors had become worn. The Degafloor systems have a unique bonding process, which allowed National Flooring to install over the top of the existing floor. As a result, precious time and money were saved on having to remove the well adhered Granwood floors and the installation of a polymer screed.

The Degafloor Flake system, which was installed over 5000sqm, provides an ideal alternative to vinyl sheet and carpets. The seamless systems do not exhibit weak spots that can often occur at grouted joints or seams, therefore reducing the overall lifetime maintenance costs. The durability of the system is well suited under high levels of foot traffic. The system also offers exceptionally flexibility in terms of aesthetics, and working closely with National Flooring, Arthur Mellows were able to create a range of bespoke finishes exactly suited to their requirements.

The Degafloor Flake system was installed in a wide range of areas including, over 35 classrooms, offices, reception area, corridors, general purpose rooms and the main hall. Using different colour combinations and stainless steels trims for demarcation, it was possible to create unique and innovative designs.

For areas where enhanced slip resistance was required, National Flooring installed the Degafloor FB system. The system, which is scattered with aggregates and sealed provides exceptional slip resistance even in wet or oily conditions. This system which was used for stairways, kitchens and toilets, provides enhanced protection against slips and trips in wet or potentially dangerous areas.

Working closely with Arthur Mellows and the main contractors, National Flooring were able to complete each stage by preparing and installing the floors with minimal disruption. The Degafloor systems cure fully within two hours of installation, meaning the projects which ran on short timescales and often in school holiday periods, could be completed efficiently allowing other trades to continue shortly after.

Gary Wentworth from Arthur Mellows Village College comments, “The Degafloor system provides a very durable and attractive floor that enhances the appearance of the College environment.  National Flooring has been very responsive, reacting and adhering to tight dead lines.  Floors in key areas have been laid out of normal hours minimising disruption in a busy College.  The high quality, hard wearing floors are more easily cleaned than other alternatives.”

National Flooring goes Underground

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

commercial flooring resin FH560189-c1d94eb0A University education is becoming more and more popular with young people; as a result The University of Birmingham has embarked on a wide range of upgrades to their student services to ensure it remains a popular choice for students seeking education.

As a part of the upgrade to the student services, The University of Birmingham Guild of Students Building, the recognised main student union for over 27,000 students in the city, has seen some radical developments. As a part of these new developments it was decided to completely refurbish the popular nightclub ‘The Underground’.

The existing floor finish had become well worn and the Guild decided it was time to give the venue a new and stylish revamp. The Guild of Students appointed student union experts, Plumtree Mee to develop a fresh and innovative new look for the club, As a part of the design theme the Degafloor QT system was chosen with a black and silver finish to complement the clubs stylish and glamorous image.

To minimise the operational impact to the Guild the full refurbishment had to occur during the summer period. The installation, which totalled 361sqm, was completed efficiently within three days. National Flooring’s expertise combined with Degafloor’sunique 2 hour cure time meant the installation could be completed with minimal disruption to other trades and allowed the remainder of the refurbishment to continue shortly after.

Rob Matthews of Plumtree Mee comments, “We chose the Degafloor QT System for its resilient technical specification, minimal on-going maintenance requirement and design flexibility. This type of flooring provides outstanding durability, so I am confident that The Underground will enjoy many years of successful trading before needing the next refurbishment.”
