Monitoring, assessing and improving working practices not only help to limit the impact on the environment but can also help businesses to save money. As part of an ongoing commitment to maximise sustainability, National Flooring have decided to become members of Investors in the Environment.

Investors in the Environment are a local, not for profit environmental accreditation scheme and are designed to help businesses save money and reduce their environmental impact. The scheme offers three levels of accreditation, Bronze, Silver and Green. The basic bronze accreditation is achieved once a business is monitoring their resources, identified targets for improved efficiencies alongside minimum standards like having a recycling system in place, and educating staff on environmental awareness. The Silver accreditation, which National Flooring is working towards, involves the same as Bronze level but with the addition of monitoring additional resources, targets for reduction identified, more environmental actions, as well as a travel plan.

Unlike ISO14001, the international standard, which can be difficult for businesses to achieve and has an all or nothing approach, Investors in the Environment prides itself on being applicable to all businesses and them being able to achieve all levels. Even a small business with 5 employees can achieve the top Green Accreditation level.

Investors in the Environment also gives businesses the opportunity to give back to the local community and help with corporate social responsibility by organising local environmental activities, in which companies can participate.

Anna Simpson, Marketing Manager at National Flooring comments, “Working for big companies and main contractors, we are quite often asked whether we have an EMS in place. We therefore wanted to demonstrate to our clients that we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and enhancing our sustainability. Having researched various schemes we decided to show our support to a local environment scheme. We hope that by implementing a dedicated EMS system and with the support of Investors in the Environment, we will have the framework to implement, monitor and control our environmental performance.”

An industrial Public success

The building which is situated in an old antiques warehouse required an industrial looking, durable floor finish to complement the industrial glam surroundings.

Throughout the entire club the décor is very distinctive and unlike any other club in the area. The bespoke design focuses strongly on the clubs industrial setting and incorporates unique elements including, exposed brick walls, iron beams and a stunningly lit copper bar. The club owners deliberated on the floor finishes available to them and having discussed their requirements with National Flooring it was decided that the Degafloor QT systemwould be ideal for the area.

The Degafloor QT system is a blend of resin and quartz which is trowel applied to provide an extremely durable and functional floor. The client decided to go ahead using two different shades of grey to help create a subtle blend to enhance the industrial setting.

Public which has a capacity of 429 has the bar area situated at the entrance of the club. The concrete floor which had previously been painted could not withstand the high footfall levels. The Degafloor QT system offers exceptional durability and will provide years of trouble free use.

The system, which is hand trowelled, was installed by National Flooring’s trained and experienced operatives over two nights at the beginning of the week when the club is closed. The system is fully cured within just two hours; therefore members of staff at the club could continue their daily activities as usual the following day.

Anna Simpson, National Flooring comments, “Public is an extremely prestigious club in Chelsea and is often frequented by celebrities, therefore we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to showcase our products and ability. As with all our installations we set high standards to ensure our clients receive a high quality installation and service. We hope that Public now have a floor to match their high profile and image and that it provides the durability that is required by these popular night-time venues. “

Tony Cela, Public, commented, “Public nightclub has an industrial setting and we try to complement this by matching the design of the club to its surroundings. The floor we had previously did not withstand the club’s environment therefore we had to look for something much more resilient. National Flooring has provided an excellent floor finish that not only will give us years of trouble free use but is ideally suited to the clubs interior design. The installation was carried out with extreme professionalism and with no disruption to the running of the club.”
